Nazaré: Where Giant Waves Meet Timeless Tradition Guide

Nazaré Beach is a world-renowned destination, famous for its colossal waves and vibrant fishing traditions. This picturesque coastal town offers a unique blend of adrenaline-pumping surfing action and authentic Portuguese culture. Whether you're a seasoned surfer seeking the ultimate challenge or a traveler looking to experience the charm of a traditional fishing village, Nazaré has something to offer everyone. Nazaré's giant waves are a relatively recent phenomenon, discovered in the early 2010s. They are caused by the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater geological formation that funnels and amplifies swells, creating waves that can reach heights of over 100 feet. These waves have attracted some of the world's best big-wave surfers, who come to Nazaré to test their skills and push the limits of what's possible. Beyond the waves, Nazaré boasts a rich history as a fishing village, with traditions that have been passed down through generations. Visitors to Nazaré can enjoy a variety of activities. Watch the big-wave surfers from the safety of the cliffs at Praia do Norte (North Beach), take a ride on the funicular to Sítio for panoramic views of the coastline, or relax on the sandy shores of Praia da Nazaré (Nazaré Beach). Explore the town's charming streets, browse the local shops, and sample fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants. Don't miss the opportunity to try *caldeirada*, a traditional fish stew, or *sardinhas assadas*, grilled sardines, both local specialties.

Transportation

Nazaré is accessible by bus from major cities in Portugal, including Lisbon and Porto. Rede Expressos is a common bus company that serves Nazaré. Once in Nazaré, the beach and town center are easily walkable. A funicular connects the lower town (Praia) to the upper town (Sítio).
